Fauna awoke to the sound of the farmhouse roof being ripped clean off. She sat up in the twin bed she and Clark had crammed themselves into for a little nap, groggy and confused.
“Honey?” she said, her voice cancelled out by the whirring sound of the helicopter blades overhead. A bright white light, harsh and almost blinding, shone down on her. She went to shield her eyes with her hands and someone grabbed her under the arms from behind. Fauna reached out for Clark, only to realize that he was dealing with an attacker of his own. The man, clad in all black, jammed a hypodermic needle into her boyfriend’s thigh. Clark howled in pain, elbowing his attacker in the throat.
