Why this book and why now
But I did accomplish a few things.
I took home top honors at poetry mash-ups, that sort of thing. I became a reporter, which was what I always wanted, then an editor, which I wanted, then a senior managerial somebody or other, which I didn’t even know I wanted, but did. I won 1st place awards at journalism contests. I married a beautiful woman—luckiest confluence of events I’ll ever know.
Then, as I was busy with my Next Big Thing—publishing a science-fiction novel I’d written—I got the news that I‘m dying. Of course I could have been told this in kindergarten—we’re all on a rotating journey to the grave—but it means a lot more when you hear it at 50 than at 5. You tend to believe it more.
