Rodney trudged through the rain, head down, arms clutched to his chest to keep his jacket closed against the wind, his right shoe squelching with every step. Of all the days he had to walk home from the bus stop, why today? He had watched Cole and Timothy and Madison and all the other kids run from the bus and climb into the waiting cars with their Moms. Rodney’s Mom, though, had not been there. She had sent him a text message: “@ dr with GMa, C U @ home soonest, XXOO.” The baby had not even arrived yet, and already he-she-it was making Rodney’s life miserable.

He had to walk on the street because the neighborhood had no sidewalks. The gutter next to the curb was already a flowing stream, forcing him into the middle of the street to avoid soaking his tennis shoes.
