Editor’s Note

Nathan Shumate

Unlike many “samplers,” Arcane Sampler isn’t a selection of stories from the full-sized anthology, which you would end up buying a second time if you go ahead and purchase the real deal. Consider this an “issue 0,” a slimmer volume of original work to let you know the kind of story to expect in the annual Arcane anthologies. If you like what you read here, you can expect more in a similar veinwithout repeatsin the first Arcane anthology, to be published at the end of 2011. If you don’t, you’re only out ninety-nine cents. Good deal, huh?

Hazards

Justin Pollock

Look, I’m not going to make myself out to be some kind of hero, especially not after what I did, but I will say that I stop anytime I see someone pulled over on the side of the highway with their hazards on. Most people, they just keep driving. They tell themselves they’re already late for an appointment or that someone’s probably called the tow truck already, but the truth is they just don’t care. Someone else will stop, that’s what they’re all thinking. So that’s why I do it—because nobody else ever does.
