Nadja Always Pleases

RAINA PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY of her modest two-bedroom home. It had been a wearying day at the office, dealing with several rich clients who thought every witticism they attempted was worthy of Oscar Wilde and every complaint they had should be hand delivered to the Supreme Court. Raina acted the queen, though, and played it cool, smiling at the jokes and offering a moment of sympathy over the complaints, and then moved forward with business. She hadn't made partner just to spend ten hours a day kissing ass. Besides, these kinds of people respected a show of strength. Had she acted the sycophant, they would have eaten her alive.

Mr. A needed his divorce finalized and his one-sided pre-nup he forced his once-upon-a-time blushing bride to sign honored to the letter, despite the noise her attorney was making. Mrs. C needed the “fucking I.R.S.” to leave her alone because “every fucking deduction” she claimed was legit, from the new computers for her company down to her weekly trips to get her nails done. Mr. and Mrs. G wanted a trust set up for their kids so they'd never have to do any more work than interviewing a new set of servants every few years after the old ones were fired for forgetting to water the prize roses, or, more likely, quit because the G's could be described by other letters -- PITA. It was all routine stuff for Raina and after each whiny client left her office she buzzed in an associate hoping to make partner and delegated the work, and then sat back and wondered why she had ever gone to law school.
