“Hey bub, what do you think you’re doing?”
The gruff question startled Steven as he squatted at the edge of the stream with a gold pan in his hands. He stood and turned to face the speaker, a large, ruddy faced man dressed in rugged mountain clothes that appeared to consist of layers of patches.
“Just looking for gold, like everyone else in this shit hole.” Steven shrugged, vaguely waving the pan in his hand.
“Well look somewhere else, this is my claim” the man said, holding a shovel in a tense, though not yet openly aggressive manner.
Steven sighed, crouched down and began packing his few possessions.
For the third time in as many days, Steven packed up his meager belongings and began searching the banks of the stream for an accessible yet unclaimed location. Since arriving, he’d been searching for a place someone else hadn’t either picked over thoroughly or already staked a claim on. Shouldering his pack, he trudged farther upstream.
