A blast of hot air greeted Bob the instant he pushed open the door. He closed his eyes until the air conditioner kicked to life with a whoosh. The promise of cool air raised Bob’s hopes, and he made a beeline to the nearest vent as the sweat started rolling down his back.
A tiny yellow ribbon dangled from the top of the vent. The rush of air should have sent it fluttering like a kite on the breeze. Instead, it swayed like the corpse at the end of a hangman’s rope. It kicked once and went still. The whoosh of air died.
Bob’s shoulders dropped.
A sheet of paper hung above the thermostat. Covered with red ink, it said, “AC Broken - to be fixed on Tuesday.”
Great, thought Bob. Another Monday in the sweltering heat.
