Larry Leavis walked past the Lambda Lambda Lambda table at rush week three times before he got the nerve up to stop and pick up a brochure. There were two guys behind the table, a gorgeous blond preppy in an Izod shirt and plaid Bermuda shorts and a Chinese guy with straight black hair and skin so smooth Larry wanted to reach out and touch it. They were busy talking to a buff Jamaican guy with dreadlocks, so Larry stood there awkwardly, looking at the pictures of the guys studying, playing touch football, or hanging around the living room of the frat house.
They were all too handsome, he thought. Nobody at the Three Lambs would ever even look at him. He’d always been a scrawny beanpole, taller than everyone else in his class, and though he’d begun to fill out in college, he still thought of himself as skinny and awkward.
He stuffed the brochure in his pocket and turned away. “Hey, wait,” the preppy guy said, breaking away from his conversation. “I’m Fitz. You interested in Three Lambs?”
Larry looked down at the table and mumbled, “Yeah.”
