I have just been as intimate with a man as a girl can get without sleeping with him. I was attending to Kurt’s laundry. Kurt, short for Kumamoto, a 50-year-old Japanese classmate of mine (in this secondary educator’s program here in Massachusetts), who asked me to watch his laundry as he went out to get something to drink. He is one of the handful men I met who seems so besotted with his wife as the first day they met.
They met when they were 20. Still college students, when they took one long at each other, locked their gazes, hesitantly smiled, their eyes chinkier yet brighter than beforeand that was that. History was written for them in the long corridors of Tokyo University.
Ten years and a daughter later, he appeared to be still enamored with her. I asked him what was the most difficult thing he ever had to adjust to while being abroad and without the slightest doubt, he answered that he hated to be away from his wife and daughter.
