Prologue

Sharp pieces of glass are scattered across the ground of a once dynamic city—millions of jagged edges ready to cut deep crevasses into bare feet, ready to bleed a person like the city had bled before she went down. The glass reminds in fragments how swift and deadly war can be. It will continue to remind for years.

The kid stares deep into cold black eyes—drowning in them. But he remembers the glass, hears it crunch beneath his boots, feels it cut into his flesh. He remembers the place he can never return. The memory defends him against complete madness.
