Chapter 1.



The gentle breathing of twelve sleeping babies ebbed and flowed through the dimly lit maternity ward of Inglewood private hospital with only the faint pings of distant machines and the soft clicking of a night nurse's shoes disturbing the peace.

One of the twelve cots began to sway gently as though the baby had woken, but the swaying turned into a wobble that grew into an unnaturally fast shudder. The cot's clipboard, "EDWARDS, RACHEL (F)" shook and rattled as the cot's wheels twisted and squeaked on the linoleum and then the swaying intensified, shaking the cot which shimmered with the speed of it. Trays clattered off the shelf below and spilled their contents onto the floor. The clipboard fell and the plastic walls of the cot cracked...
