My Dearest Isabella,
It is January 15th of 1825 as I write this; our last year apart is coming to an end. I just read the letter you wrote in October, I cannot believe it arrived so fast. I trust you will keep this letter in the strictest of confidence as if it were to be seen by anyone other than you it would truly cause a scandal we could not bear.
I have come to learn the demands of your father were for the best for both of us. Had he allowed us to marry, before I was prepared to provide for you, our lives would be very difficult indeed? I have heeded his advice, and though it has been painful to be apart, I have built a home and prepared the fields that will provide for us the rest of our lives.
