Slow Honey

I never understood why Pappy called me slow. My brother Jeremy always teased me about it, too.

But I could run real fast. And when it came to the family business, building tables and chairs and desks for the fancy folk up the hill, shit, all I had to do was glide my hands over the wood and I knew, just knew, where it was gonna split or buckle or stress, and so I built around it. I always finished with whatever I was making before Jeremy, too, and even though what he made would break and mine would last—Pappy still called me slow.
