We spent a lot of the summer of 1974 visiting my father in hospital. I was only 12, like all kids I didn’t really appreciate exactly how quickly time would move along when I was older. What i knew then was that those long afternoons sitting by the bedside dragged and dragged, sliced off second by second by the large ward clock. I knew it was bad form to look at that clock but I couldn’t help it. Mostly it had crept round by a couple of minutes each time I looked. I must have looked at the clock a lot.
