Nick jetted down the hallway with his backpack hanging from his shoulder and his sneakers whistling on the slippery floor. He darted around the corner out of the line of sight of the others leaving their classrooms. His heart hammered in his chest, and his hair was plastered to his forehead. While he tried to gain control, he closed his eyes and willed himself to calm down.
He was eighteen today, and that usually meant great things—independence, no curfew, and soon graduation. But the changes in his life had been happening with greater intensity over the last year, like they knew his adulthood loomed. What freaked him out was what was going on with his body. This wasn’t normal stuff or anything a guidance counselor could explain.
