“That didn't go well,” said Amanda, pushing her whip into her belt. Massaging the mottled skin on her forearm, Amanda looked at Moriarty. “Put the dead ones in the bags.”

Moriarty would be happy to comply. Amanda knew the bonus from this haul would be big. Ever since the lightning struck him, Moriarty was desperate to buy more batteries for his pacemaker.

Moriarty said, “They never did that before.” He scooped a bundle of ropy fibers into a plastic bag. “I've never seen them push up all in a bunch like that.” Scratches from the tendtrils webbed Moriarty's face. Amanda knew her face looked the same, except for the patches of discolored skin that had nothing to do with her job.
