“Scientific literacy too often proves to be a costume worn by the scientifically illiterate, specifically by those desperate and impoverished minds that lack a sound scientific argument to oppose a sound scientific argument.
“There is a lot of pseudo-science out there, most of it coming from pseudo-experts who make portentous claims, lacking in both reason and evidence, about the effects modernization and technological development have on the human species and its environment. Why do I call these detractors ‘pseudo-experts’? Because their conclusions about these exaggerated effects are, in a word, wrong. Why are their conclusions wrong? Because their science is, not wrong – that would be understandable – but their science, frankly, is false. Their conclusions derive, not from any scientific process, but from their own predilections. They don’t bother with aggregating actual evidence for their arguments, choosing instead to conjure them up. Worse still, they call these fabrications science.
