Jospar seldom nodded, although this time he did. He must have, he realized, to go beyond the pre-determined quadrant he was sent to explore. He knew in space flight, a nodding off, a missed moment, a distraction on his instrument panel or a long-held gaze out his starcruiser’s window could be not merely inconvenient, but fatal.
No matter, in the few seconds he missed—and he would not even admit to himself he’d missed those seconds—he was off course, perhaps even out-of-quadrant, and now he needed to find out where he was. He didn’t panic. He kept his starcruiser surging forward, cutting through the blackness of space that was so often home to him. He had often been out-of-quadrant, beyond quadrant, as he was not only a starflyer, not only an explorer, but the premier starflyer, the premier explorer, so his judgment to leave a quadrant and go beyond was actually often part of his charge. He had just never nodded off before.
