Jamie Thatcher watched from a quarter of a mile away, as the mountain lion turned her head and sniffed the air. He focused his camera tighter. She growled at the pair of cubs bouncing in the red rocks above her. The cubs stopped their playing, striking a couple of brilliant poses as they focused their attention on their mother. He’d never heard the sharp chirping noise she made to hurry them along. Moments later the three cats disappeared behind the rocky hill.

As he folded up his tripod, Jamie wondered what’d spooked the pumas. He always made sure to keep a safe distance when he photographed wild animals. He scanned the hillside with keen eyes, trying to determine what the mother smelled before she called her cubs away. Jamie knew, most wild creatures tended to avoid creatures like himself. They could sense his difference. But Jamie doubted the mountain lion would’ve sensed the bear lying just beneath his human form from across the valley.
