THE DITCH

I am in a ditch. It's dry, and just now I can't think how I got here. I wish the world would stop spinning, then I could think. It's quiet. My heart is pounding, why? I must have been running but I don't remember. Perhaps if I close my eyes it will be better.

It isn't, not really. I remember now and that doesn't make it any better. Why did I listen to Jakko? He said it would be easy. All we had to do, he said, was fly into this God-forsaken town, meet up with his mate Charlie, turn over the easiest bank in the western world and we'd be back on the plane to England half a million richer before anyone knew what was happening. Well, Jakko, if I ever see you again this side of Hell I'm going to tell you it wasn't that easy. These rustic Yanks who live in this snake-infested dustbowl might seem slow but it's all an illusion. They can be damned quick when they need to be. And they needed to be today, dammit.
