Chapter 1

The instant of waking was followed almost instantly by awareness and, mere milliseconds later, by a moment of recollected horror as the events of yesterday flashed through her mind. Bare fractions of a second passed before her head jerked round on the pillow and she was peering at the clock, panic blinding her as she stared at it, frantic to make out the time. When she made out the configuration of the hands on the old-fashioned alarm clock with the all-too-audible tick that had accompanied her vain efforts to sleep last night, she sagged in relief: quarter past six. Thank God! The welts on her bottom burned, as if to remind her what would have happened had she over-slept or failed to hear the alarm that was due to go off in fifteen minutes time. Though that, she thought, coming fully awake and staring at the thing with something like hatred, as if it alone was responsible for her predicament, was unlikely: the bell on top was damned near as big as the face of the clock itself and it had not just one, but two clapper arms.
