A few of us are going out for a drink,” she coaxed. “Would you like to join us?”

Immediately, I felt my cheeks begin to colour. I bent my head back to my microscope and played with the fine adjustment knob, glad that a substantial lock of blond hair had worked itself free of my tight bun and had fallen forward to help camouflage my flushed face.

Oh, gosh.” I murmured self-consciously. “That’s really nice of you. But I need to finish working through these slides.”

Nikki, put a hand on her hip. “You’re always working. Come on. It’s Friday night. Don’t you want to have some fun?” she paused, and added archly. “Daniel will be there.”

I felt my cheeks radiate heat. Damn! My younger assistant had correctly intuited that I had a king-sized crush on Daniel Hunter, a fellow scientist who worked in an adjoining laboratory at Taylor and Vaughn Pharmaceuticals.

Daniel, was tall, with sexy, blue-denim eyes and a body that was so gorgeous, I could feel my panties moistening every time I caught a glimpse of him in the corridor. I had never been brave enough to engage Daniel in conversation in the cafeteria at lunch, preferring to bury my head in whatever novel I had brought to hide in that day.

Daniel was working on a different project than I and there was no need for us to consult. So, apart from an occasional nod in the hallways and a crisp good morning, we had never really spoken. Better to come across as aloof and distant, than for Daniel and the others to realise the truth about me. Which was, that I was a woman in her early 30’s, who was an intelligent and accomplished clinical pharmacologist…but who was also socially awkward and pathologically shy…especially with men.
