Lonely specters of damp fog wrapped themselves around Colin Ryan’s face as the ancient smell of decay and forgotten herbs rose up from beneath his horse’s churning hooves. Despite an air of mystery and loneliness, the moor was beautiful and he loved the feeling of desolation it presented. But after four years of medical school, four years of the cloying odor of chloroform and dark, cavernous halls, the Scottish moor seemed almost a sunlit escape.

He pulled his horse down to a walk, content to turn his attention from the landscape to the woman who rode at his side. Dark curls framed her face, wisps of errant hair allowed their escape only when she was riding. Other times, they were swept up in perfect symmetry, as befit the daughter of a professor at the University of Edinburgh. But here, with him, she was simply Elena, relaxed and contented to ride a huge beast that masqueraded as a horse.
