Red Nova

Gomin pressed his face against the tinted glass, staring, his long yellow moustaches drooping. On the other side of the glass space stretched like a great black maw, and far deep into the maw glowed a bloated reddish orange star. At least, the tinted glass had filtered the light in such a way that the star looked reddish orange. No human could look straight at the star so close without filtering. The rays warmed Gomin's face, though he knew only a fraction of a fraction of the star's actual radiation reached him through the glass.

The rest reflected away, or seeped into the sophisticated solar panels all across the station. Waste not, want not, and that held especially true in space. Perhaps that was why Gomin felt so crappy. He'd been raised to hold 'waste not, want not' as a kind of sacred command, but hardly anybody else on the station could say the same.
