Jacob Burden had seen some pretty strange sights in his time. There'd been the hairy giant of Injun lore he'd glimpsed one autumn twilight while hunting in the wild Arkansas hills of his youth. Or the time he'd been caught in blizzard and found himself being stalked by a red-eyed thing that looked like a man but seemed neither harmed nor hampered by the bone-chilling wind and relentless snow. The one that invaded his dreams most often was what he'd seen that night after the battle of Shiloh. Jacob had held his breath while watching those pale, hunched figures prowl the killing fields, sometimes stopping to sniff at a corpse like carrion eaters in search of their next meal.
