Stacey carefully opened the door, hoping that the noise wouldn't wake up her stepfather. He thought she was staying over her best friend’s house and if he caught her sneaking back home at 4 am he would know that had been a lie. She had planned to spend the night with one of the guys from school but after that date ended badly, sneaking into her house seemed like the best option. If she could just get to her room and stay there until after he left for work, he would never know she had lied.
She held her breath as she crept inside and closed the door carefully. She stood unmoving for a moment, listening carefully for any sign that she had woken him up. When she stayed out late, this was usually the point when she heard her stepfather's voice bellowing from upstairs. She waited for the telltale yell but when it didn't come, Stacey breathed a sigh of relief.
She always hated it when he yelled at her. Not that he scared her – it was just that he made her feel so guilty. Even though she had only known him the last couple of years, he had become someone she trusted and relied on. She hated to let him down but she wasn’t accustomed to someone telling her what to do. When it had been just her and her mom, her mother hadn’t ever cared what she did. She had always thought her mom considered her a burden but when her mom ran off with another man the day she turned eighteen, she was sure of it.
