Interview with Theresa Shoup

What's the story behind your latest book?
I am an elementary teacher and when I worked in Arizona, I had a principal named Mr. Hepler who loved all kinds of amazing ties! He asked me if I knew of a book about ties that he could share for our library night where he would be reading a story to students. I didn't know of any and couldn't find one so I wrote him a short story. Over the years, this short story became longer and longer. I edited it countless times and soon realized it would be a great chapter book! I love this story! I've read it to classrooms and they loved it too! I hope you will as well!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing my writing with students and seeing their faces light up, makes it all worth while! I love to teach students lessons while igniting in them an excitement for reading but also as writers. I believe everyone has a story to tell, it's what makes us connected to our past, present and future. I want children to realize that they too have wonderful stories to tell and if I can do it, so can they! I started writing when I was 8 and though my writing has definitely improved since then, a writer is never too young to start sharing. It not only is important to learning about ourselves but it's an exciting adventure that we can take traveling through our own imaginations. I love sharing but I also love when students are brave enough to share with me!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm inspired by doing the best I can for my family! I have three children, a husband, a grand baby, and two dogs. I love being there for them. I also love my job as a teacher. I work at Garth Elementary School in Georgetown, KY and love igniting a love for learning in my students. I use creativity and energy to teach them! It energizes me too! And of course, I love creating things. I love all kinds of art, writing, poetry and music! I get very excited to create something out of nothing but also by sharing with others.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing poetry when I was 8 years old. My family (12 brothers and sisters and mom and dad) had moved from California to Arizona, out in the middle of nowhere. We had animals and apples but other than that, we had each other and some friends that were scattered out in the sticks. One friend's mom offered to have a poetry club on some Saturdays. We walked a mile to their house and sat out under a shelter in the hot sun, drank fresh lemonade, ate oatmeal cookies and played with rhymes. Nelda Leighton's love of poetry poured into us and we in turn, fell in love with writing! My mom was always excited about what I wrote and this ignited a further passion in me. Royal Rhymers for life!
What are you working on next?
I continue to write educational poetry, lyrics, music videos, lesson plans and picture books. I'm also very excited to continue on with Tiny's Ties and am currently writing the next book in this budding series! Keep a look out!
