Interview with Dan Wild

Describe your desk
It is mobile. It depends on what time I wake up and what cafes are still open.
What do you read?
I am trying to curtail the amount of news I read, especially in the morning. Our mainstream media is riven with blow-words, incidents taken out of contemporary and historical context, or to put it simply, propaganda. My keen interest in international relations informs my writing, which is an attempt to expose through parody the narratives imposed on us by mainstream society.

I read a lot of history and popular science, essays, and believe it or not, the occasional work of fiction!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The central character of my Outer Rim Tales, Chuck Marley, comes from a short story I wrote in high school. I believe my writing has improved since then!
What is your writing process?
I have a general idea where the plot is heading. But when I sit down and write, anything may happen! One of the beauties of writing is having something to think about, whether that is at the bus-stop, walking aimlessly, or drifting off during family gatherings.
Name one of your formative influences?
I can't go past Isaac Asimov. Roberts of Dawn was sitting on my Dad's bookshelf. I quickly devoured the entire Robot series, then got stuck into Foundation - I was sucked into all six of them.
