Interview with Maria Ferreira

Published 2017-09-26.
What are you working on next?
My fourth book, an Autobiography is still waiting for a suitable photo for its cover, however, since so much mind blowing events has happened this past year, I am now required to do an update on my Autobiography!
I am working on several other projects at moment. Among others, I am working fast and furiously to complete last year's NANOWRIMO book to publish. I am going to do a ROMANCE, based on my and my husband, Alain's story for this year's NANOWRIMO. also, I have returned to the seminary, to complete my studies! :)
So, as you can see, I am a very busy Girl. :)
Who are your favorite authors?
I have three favorites. Firstly, God is still the all time best selling Author and the Bible is the best book ever written. Secondly, Ellen G. White. She writes books that are geared to helping us understand the Bible better and she guides us towards a closer relationship with our Savior. My third favorite author is my best friend Author Michael Malyon, who introduced me to Smashwords. Mike has a knack of describing God, His Kingdom and the life we can expect to live with Him in His heavenly palace in such an awesome way that one can actually see it and wish we were there already!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sooner I get up, the sooner I can find ways to try and make a difference in people's lives and the sooner can I be blessed by being a blessing to someone. This is my calling in life!
How do you approach cover design?
My cover design must be part of the story. It must create questions that makes the reader curious about the contents of the book. I find covers a bit of a challenge, however, as it is so technical. Technical stuff is unfortunately not one of my talents.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Hanneke's Gift was originally written in Afrikaans and published in Die kerkbode when I was eight years old.
Describe your desk
My desk is an organised chaos. Everything around me may look like a whirlwind has blown through it, but where my keyboard and mouse is placed, it needs to be clear and free of obstacles.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Boksburg, Gauteng. My mom died when I was seven. My dad married my step mother when I was in grade two. My dad was a difficult person to live with. My step mother was my soft place to land. She introduced me to Jesus and she was the person that edited my first short story.
When did you first start writing?
One day, when I was eight years old, I read a short story for children in "Die Kerkbode" and thought I would love to write a story like that! That is when I wrote my first story.
What's the story behind your autobiography, "It Isn't Easy Being Me"?
My journal/ autobiography tells the story of someone who had much on her plate to deal with from early childhood.
From academic difficulties, health concerns to family and other relationship issues. It has strengthened her relationship with her Creator, whom she loves dearly, and makes her eager to share the many important lessons from these events as object-lessons with other people, who will hopefully also find them valuable.
All was not only doom and gloom, however. She also had several successes and many blessings along the way, which she loves to share.
She has equipped herself with training in health and counselling skills in order to assist people with their questions, concerns and doubts. It is her dearest prayer that God will use her life experiences as a tool to guide His children, whom He loves to the point sacrificing His own life, home to Him. Eternally.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I told my friend, Author Michael Malyon, about the first short story I wrote when I was eight. He challenged me to translate that story from Afrikaans to English and to write nineteen more stories. He then helped me with the publishing process.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write stories that tell people about Jesus and invite them to join the happiest family of all. It is my greatest reward when someone tells me they met Jesus because of a story I wrote.
What is your writing process?
I pray before I start writing. I need to know that the message I convey is inspired of God. In essence, my stories are sermons in essay form.
What do your fans mean to you?
I do not really have fans, I have friends. I make friends, introduce them to Jesus and encourage them to become His disciples or "fans".
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a Lifestyle Counselor. I help people with health and lifestyle issues. I admin a ministry on Facebook, where I offer free Bible studies. I am also a full time theology student.
On top of all this, I am now working to resolve some legal issues that make my life look like a real - life - soapy -Drama.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy a story that has a bit of everything, romance, history, adventure, humor and a moral lesson as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my laptop.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I Google them.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite book is the Bible. It is Jesus's love letter to me. It tells me where I game from, where I am now and where I should be heading to.
I love Ellen G. White's writings. Desire of Ages and Ministry of Healing are among my favorites.
Then there is my friend Author Michael Malyon's work. Among my favorites are More Than Sex and Armageddon - In Defense Of An Awesome God. I They are a mix of ancient history, adventure and romance with a moral lesson woven into them.
I also enjoy the series by Jean M. Auel. I They are a mix of ancient history, adventure and romance with a moral lesson woven into them.
Who takes the photo's for your covers?
Where possible Author Michael Malyon(from Smashwords)does my cover photography in his own Christian DVD recording studio at home.
