Interview with Michael Beech

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always been an independent author. I started writing for magazines and then began printing and distributing my books in hardcover--and I still do at my website--and it intrigued me to try publishing to the ebook market. It was well worth the effort to add the ebook distribution channel.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Wow! That's easy. The educational guides provided here are priceless. I read and reread them, analyzed them, and followed them to the letter in creating my books. It was hard work, but it would have been nearly impossible without those guides. Now I can look at the ebooks published by authors not following those guidelines and clearly see where they went wrong. if you want to look like the professional you are, then the style guides should be your bible. I did, also, read some ebooks on the subject, which helped my greatly with editing and formatting.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I write mostly technical information and I love sharing my specialized knowledge. I've helped thousands of photographers advance their skills and it is great to hear from them about how happy they are using the information I have provided.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
You'll laugh . . . but it's my dogs. They need out to pee, and I just can't make them wait any longer than necessary. They never bark, but I know they are waiting anxiously. Also, when they come out of their crate, they are so happy and check first to see if it really me, then they go bounding out into the yard like deer. It always makes me smile, and that starts the day well.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Gee, so much. I guess I'm easily bored, because I can't just sit. Family and grandchildren, reading (of course), photography, hiking in the mountains, sail boating when I can, woodworking, jewelry making . . . stuff like that.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! It was in the 7th grade. It was a Sci-Fi story because I was really into science fiction then (and still). The name of the story was provided by the teacher and was "Seven Never Came." I still remember the plot I came up with and I don't think it was half bad, though I imagine I really botched the job. Hmmm. Maybe I'll dust that one off and give it another go!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Again, yes! When I say that, I mean the first real book that I ordered and read. Obviously, I had read many things before, but the first that made the big impression was in the 4th grade. It was Thor Heyerdahl's "Kon-Tiki: Across the Pacific in a Raft." I have loved true-life adventures ever since.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like my Kindle PaperWhite, and I like my NOOK, too. But recently I have acquired an Apple iPad Mini and I really like the way it works with its super clear display. It starts up faster than, say, an Android device and I read Kindle, Nook, EPUB and PDF formats on it. Does great.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a very focused historical event in WWII. My father was in a B17 bomber that was shot down over Germany during the greatest one-day air battle ever fought. The story of his plane, "Brennan's Circus," and their heroic and miraculous escape has been featured in books and magazines, but never fully told.
