Interview with J. A. Parrish

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Free promotions always do well, as few people are willing to take a chance on an unknown writer.
Describe your desk
No desk... I've written mostly on a mobile device or on a laptop...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the eastern coast of the United States. I'd say that I was mostly influenced by classic movies, fairytales, and science fiction.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since college, but that was mostly short poems. I started writing stories once I started to indulge my interest in visual effects and animation production.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book was inspired by classic fairytales and myths, like King Arthur and Sleeping Beauty.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I tried to find a publisher and a trustworthy agent, but it is difficult to know who to trust with your work. Besides, it is tough out there. Teen drama and books by the criminally famous seem to be the name of the game these days.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to create characters, then I like to drop them into a situation and see how they handle it. Even though I know what I want to happen, I rarely know how the characters will make it happen, until it happens.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a followup to 'Walt of Ether,' featuring one of its more mysterious characters, Wraith.
Who are your favorite authors?
Neil Gaiman and Darren Shan are very different writers, but they are high on my list of favorites.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sometimes I wakeup with a new story in mind and have to type it up right away. In some cases, I've dreamt an entire book. Other times, I've had a good idea for an animation production technique, tool, or I'm just not tired anymore and want to make something.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm usually making something in 3D, while listening to audiobooks.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was awful, cliche, and poorly constructed. That was more than 18 years and 3 states ago.
What is your writing process?
When I have an idea for a book or a new chapter, I write. When I don't I do something else.
