Interview with Izzy Ballard

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was always telling stories as a child. And getting in trouble for them. One day I forgot my homework. I must have been about 6 years old. When I got to school I explained that I'd dropped it because I saw a cat being hit by a car. By the time I got to the end of the story (i.e. excuse), I think there must have been about a dozen dead cats.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love The Marriage of True Minds, by Stephen Evans, a touching, humorous and lovely love story. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I enjoy Darynda Jones's books about a woman who sees dead people and dates the son of the devil.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read all the time. Most everything that is fun and lighthearted.
Describe your desk
Hmm. A mess?
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book, which is coming out later this year, The Alaska Girl and The Spy, is a new Abigail Vertuccio novel. Abbey, a reluctant clairvoyant, and her friends have to figure out who is threatening them and as usual, do it with quirky humor and intrepid spirits. No bad guy is safe when Abbey, Justine and Jo are on the job!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being about to make up stories( without getting into trouble) and working in my pajamas:)
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without them, who am I writing for?
How do you approach cover design?
I have always loved art and was an Art Professor once upon a time. When I start to design a cover, I consider the mood of the book in picking colors and images. I also consider whether a design would make me pick up the book if I saw it in a bookstore or library.

I never dreamt of running away to Alaska, but now, of three things I was certain: 1. Waking up in bed with a stranger wasn't the fun it might sound like on three vodkas and a dare. 2. Looking in the mirror and not knowing who I was? Sucked. 3. Finding I had enough unexplained bumps and bruises to make a linebacker cry meant I had to get away and fast. Alaska seemed like a good idea at the time.
