Interview with 5amWriterMan

When did you first start writing?
I recall writing stories in elementary school and enjoying the creativity of the process. I am also a huge comic book fan and I ued to create my own comic books. Things changed in high school - for my first three years of English class, I was repeatedly told I couldn't write a good essay and no teacher sat down with me to show me how to do it properly. I quickly lost interest in reading and writing of any sort and concentrated on the sciences; eventually completing an honours degree in Chemistry.

As an adult, I began writing poetry and journaling to help with my mental illness (social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder & depression) and it re-sparked my interest in writing as well as reading fiction. It`s only in the past couple of years that I began to seriously consider self-publishing some of my writings.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! It was a Grade 8 school assignment and we had to write about an embarrassing moment. I had many self-esteem issues growing up and one of them dealt with bad acne as an adolescent. So I wrote this story about waking up and going berserk over a huge, bright red pimple at the tip of my nose. I wrote it so quickly, without much thinking, and my teacher loved it! She read aloud to the whole class! At 38 years old, I still get excited over such small but special events in my life. Sometimes I wish she would've taught me in high school and maybe I'd be a better writer...and maybe I wouldn't have had lost years of reading and writing fiction.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Vacancy / No Vacancy, is an attempt to write a light-hearted and fun gay romance story with some erotica sprinkled throughout because I enjoy being turned on when I read a good story. It's quite different from the dark, tortured story of my first book, Infected Thoughts, but if you read carefully, there is some darkness hovering around the protagonist, Peter - besides the obvious scene in Chapter 8 - that comes from my real life experiences and my own questions & doubts about love, sex, friendship, society, etc. Sammy, on the other hand, is the idealist that I wish I could be in my own life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I don't consider myself an "author." I decided to publish these two short stories to see if people would enjoy the things I have to say. Also, I'm not confident to deal with rejection from a publisher or deal with someone telling me to change parts of my story. They're written they way I want them to be read. I recognize that I need to continue to polish my writing and when I self-publish my first novel, then maybe I'll consider myself an "author."
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords allowed me to read my words on my iPad like I do with some of my favourite novels. Seeing it like that is a great feeling of accomplishment, whether or not I sell any copies. It also made the conversion process between my Word document to any eReader format very easy!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Currently I enjoy writing gay erotica and being turned on while I write brings me plenty of "joy." :-)
What are you working on next?
I have a lot of ideas for different stories and I'm not sure which direction to go, so I am currently writing them for my weekly #TGIFF stories that I post on my blog. One of the stories was posted before I completed Vacancy / No Vacancy and it was that story that made me want to continue writing about Peter and Sammy. I'm expecting another one of my #TGIFF stories might do the same or I may be inspired by something I read or experience that will trigger my creative juices.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
The best place I've discovered great eBooks and great new authors is via Twitter. I'm an avid fan of Twitter and some of the best stories I've read in the last couple of years have been tweeted or retweeted by someone I'm following on Twitter.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many and afraid I might miss one, but here goes:

Armistead Maupin
J.D. Salinger
Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Jose Saramago
Michael Chabon
Patrick Dennis
Jay Bell
Christian Baines
David Hallman
Brandon Shire

and so on...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Every morning is usually a challenge for me. If you've read my story, Infected Thoughts, you'll recognize the detail I describe with Gus' panic attacks, anxiety and depression - that's from real experience. At the moment, being able to sleep a few hours at night is my focus because if I sleep well then I feel much better in the morning. My current non-routine is watch a movie, check Twitter, have breakfast at some point, drink my green tea (I had to stop drinking coffee...eek!!!), nap, breathe through my anxiety, write (although I do most of it at night), clean the house, and/or lay in bed thinking about any-and-everything. I'm usually much better in the afternoon and on good days I am motivated to leave the house, enjoy reading in the sun, exercising, and so on.
How do you approach cover design?
I do my own cover design. Two passions of mine are visual art - I paint as a hobby - and photography. I also enjoy tinkering with creative computer programs and apps. Mix that all together and I get to create my own cover designs...and the designs I create are abstractions based on the theme of the book or a playing with the title. For example, I tried to make the title for Vacancy / No Vacancy look like something from a cheap motel.
