Interview with Celeste Hall

Published 2014-03-26.
What are you working on next?
As a special kind of thank you to everyone that has stayed with me during my long absence between 2012 and 2013, I made a challenging New Years resolution for 2014. My goal is to publish fourteen titles this year. That is more than a title each month! The plan is to self publish one for each month, but to also submit at least four additional titles in the traditional route.
So far, so good. I have two new short stories available (The Inventor's Throne and A Touch of Irish). Two additional stories are now under contract with traditional publishers and three others are currently under consideration.
Check back in late April or early May for the long awaited book #5 in the Dream Seduction series!
Who are your favorite authors?
I love so many that it's hard to whittle it down to a convenient handful. I guess the ones that will always hold a special place in my heart are those that stocked my shelves during my teen and early adult years. Nora Roberts, Suzanne Brockmann, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice and many other great authors.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I've always loved being outdoors, but especially in the wild places. I grew up in Arizona and would wander the desert collecting snakes, lizards, scorpions and other creatures which I'd keep in a variety of display cages and tanks that lined one wall in my bedroom.
Later, after my family moved north, I would jump onto my little Quarter horse mare and vanish into the mountains for days at a time. Often with only a bushy dog for companion.
These days my ventures are much tamer. I still enjoy exploring the wild places, but I like to take my three daughters with me, and we usually keep it down to just a single day trip.
I also enjoy photography, gardening and spending far too much time on Facebook.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I've been writing since I was knee high to a grasshopper, but I do remember a few of my early stories. My mother kept quite a few of them, although most have been lost or accidentally destroyed.
My earlier books were all about the things that either fascinated or frightened me as a child, so they could be a little strange. I recall one story was about a boy who kept rabbits in a big shed in his backyard, but something happened (I don't remember what exactly now) and one of the rabbits mutated into a giant shaggy red-haired monster rabbit which he had to vanquish before it could destroy his home.
What is your writing process?
It's different every time. Sometimes I write by the seat of my pants, just letting the characters go and do whatever they want. Other times I will sit down and write out a detailed plan for each major plot twist and how I want the story to move from beginning to the ending. I think it just depends on what I'm writing and how I feel about it.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My two favorite genres are Erotic Romance and Supernatural Suspense/Horror. I know that those are about as similar as dogs and cats, but we all need a little variety in our lives, right? Sometimes I want a happy ending, a romantic alpha hero that will love and protect his woman at all costs. And sometimes I want to shiver in fear as the hero faces certain death and maybe just escapes a horrible fate.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
For the longest time it was a computer. Then my darling husband bought me a kindle and I loved it write up until the day my teenager adopted it. Now I'm back to reading on the computer again.
I really must buy myself another kindle soon!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am a self proclaimed wretch when it comes to marketing. I really don't like asking people to "like" me in any way shape or form, so most of my marketing has simply been word-of-mouth. Someday in the near future I must make an effort to be more outgoing and market driven, even if it kills me.
Describe your desk
Desk? What desk? You mean that big flat surface which holds all my old crap up off the floor in the other room?
After my darling husband hung the big screen TV in my bedroom. and connected it to a computer, I have pretty much moved my operation in there. Half the time I'm writing while lounging on the bed. On ever other day I use the (even larger) big screen in the living room. I haven't actually worked in my office in almost a year, but it's on my to-do list. I really need to get that spaced cleaned out so I can get back to recording audio versions of my books.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find them in a variety of different ways. Usually it's by word-of-mouth, someone telling me about some fantastic book they just finished and loved. But I do have my top favorite authors that I keep track of and will buy their books as they come out.
