Interview with Ajith Ram

Describe your desk
Mostly taken over by my giant 27-inch monitor, speakers and keyboard. Just a couple of books on it at the moment.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Kerala, India in a house full of books. Also, I am 90% blind. So this meant I was lousy at sports. But I became very good at reading. So that definitely helped to push me in the direction of writing both fiction and non-fiction.
When did you first start writing?
At the professional level, when I was 18 years old. An article that I wrote got published in The Hindu newspaper and that helped to boost my self-confidence!
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a series of short stories that I wrote over the past 20 years. It is only this year that I sat down and compiled it into a single book. All the locations in the stories are places that I have visited.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I always knew I wanted to write fiction. Until now, most of my fiction writing had been focused on creating design documents for videogames. There are many stories which cannot be told in the form of a videogame.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The act of writing itself is the greatest joy.
What are you working on next?
A series of detective novels.
Who are your favorite authors?
P.G. Wodehouse, Alistair Maclean, Robert Ludlum, G.K. Chesterton, among the modern ones.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That burning hole in my stomach!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, listening to music, watching documentaries.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Vaguely. Something horrible when I was in school.
What is your writing process?
Write, rewrite and then rewrite again.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No. I do remember the first romance story that I read. That was Lorna Doone.
