Interview with A. Nation

Published 2019-02-12.
Who are your favorite authors?
Agatha Christie, Isaac Asimov, H.G.Wells, Rita Mae Brown, Tim Stout, Georgette Heyer
So, what is next in your writing tales?
I'm working on another detective story that will end up on Mars in the future. Artificial Intelligence seems to be an interesting topic now. What if by the actions of an innocent perpetrator who kills is seen only by the recording memory of an A.I. And so the story begins.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I do custom Embroidery and promote my book
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through my online library or by a friend's suggestion
What is your writing process?
I have an idea that I think about what the scenarios could be. If there is enough to write about then I will begin. Usually the idea has to really impress me or make me upset. I usually write at bedtime if I'm not reading. Some of the most interesting ideas occur at that time. The next day I type my notes into my computer and refine it some. After the story is finished at about 60,000+ I give a copy to my readers and continue to reread my story myself until it is polished.
How do you approach cover design?
In my business with imprinting, I have Corel Draw and lots of clipart to draw from. The cover has to have some relation to the story. I do it my way because I can't find artwork from Createspace that is applicable.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mystery, Murder Mysteries
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle because it is what my husband bought me. I'm satisfied.
When did you first start writing?
Over four years ago. I discovered a writing club at my local library and the people have been great in helping me write and publish.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is part of a series about aliens trying to find their lost relatives that escaped a world that had been destroyed. I wanted to express what could happen with these particular aliens if their society was split and did not follow the ways of their ancestors. What would the social aspects of rediscovering long lost relatives and the ramifications. Of course I throw in two humans to counter balance the story and give the readers a connection.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I do this for fun. I wanted to do with less cost involved. I like having a hands on with my writing, using my readers to critique, and an easy way to publish.
What do your fans mean to you?
I value their opinion and expertise on what I might write about especially the technical descriptions and hope I can give them more.
What are you working on next?
The fifth saga in my domino series called Return.
Two humans, who have been traveling with the ahmans through space after leaving the planet of Arret, learn their antagonist has broken out of prison. Verdock kidnaps the Counselor Prime's new wife and then takes his revenge onto the humans and their friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Similar But Not the Same
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
This story made me realize what my focus and purpose is to write.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Putting my emotion into the descriptions
Since we last talked, you had finished your book Found. What have you done since that was published?
I concluded that story with Return, There's No Easy Way. This is pure SciFi and conflict between good and evil. Robert almost loses his life but in the end all arrive safe on Mars. I leave the story with a few unanswered questions to be explored in following books.
In the meantime, I wrote Desert Shock, another detective story that takes place in the future with many of the same familiar characters. This was a story of true stories taken from today's news. I wanted to express what would happen when Mother Nature is more controlled than man's manipulations.
My latest book, is a Nanowrimo story that takes off from Where Did They Go? This one is called The Pottery Shop, What Lies Beneath. Even though the main focus of the story is about pottery and who killed the potters, my main character is drawn into her friend's fairyland world to save its inhabitants.
What are you writing now?
Artificial Intelligence is becoming the most talked about subject today. What if an A.I. witnessed a crime? Not an ordinary crime but a crime by an innocent that had no reason to kill. Because there are no moral safeguards in the A.I., the information is stored on the android's memory disk. This will be another futuristic detective story that brings my MC to Mars.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
One on one for paperbacks. Facebook exposure has generated more of the digital formats. Smashwords digital month long sales program also has been a great boost.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I can post a sale price any time I want and change the content quickly if an error is discovered.
Do you care what reviews say?
Yes, I do. I rely on readers to tell me if adjustments need to be made to make the story better.
What inspires me to keep writing?
First of all, I love writing and expressing myself in the scenes of my books. Fictional Stories come in rapid succession into my thoughts as daily lives flow past, whether by the news, personal experiences, or a twist on reality. I had barely finished writing my last book, Mystery Along the Danube, when I started writing another sequel to the Urban Series. The Danube story came as a result of my trip through Europe. This will begin the Rosetta Blessing mysteries. It is now on pre-order at half price. Order yours now!
