Interview with Alan R. Secor

What motivated you to become an indie author?
The first reason is my impatience with agents. The second reason is that publishers don't help as much as they use to do.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It is too early to tell because of the lack of sales and my lowering the price two times.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The emotions that can come from the writing and the healing it brings. I also hope to entertain, teach, and bring joy to the reader.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean a lot to me.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a short story. It will be a fictional adventure based on real life.
Who are your favorite authors?
Leo Tolstoy, Isaac Asimov, Hemingway, and Dostoevsky are some of my favorite authors.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Another day is a new beginning, but I must have coffee. I may even smoke a small cigar. Listening to songbirds and gazing out my windows at trees makes the morning seem brighter.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to exercise and walk, although I have to push myself sometimes. I love watching YouTube videos on intellectual topics, music and nature. I also try to read, and I have a day job.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the books, I read are paperbacks or hardcovers. I need to buy a Kindle.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Unfortunately, I don't remember, but it was probably when I was a teenager. I seem to remember trying to write poetry first. I am 60 years old now.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Writing book reports and reading them in front of the class is a good memory, but I was always afraid. My first published story was in the ninth grade for the school newspaper.
What is your writing process?
I am old fashioned I prefer writing with a good pen in a notebook, and then I will type it at home. I have an editor who polishes my writing. I don't write an outline. I wait for something to inspire me and then I begin the story.
Describe your desk
My desk, where I write at work when I am slow is made of wood. At home, my desk is an old leaf table I have had since I was a child. I use an office chair with no back, because of injuries in the past.
How do you approach cover design?
I chose a picture that I took for my first book that was accepted by a photo stock company. The cover design for my next story will take more thought. I feel the cover design is important, but just a cover.
