Interview with A.W.Chrystalis

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do actually. It was when I was about 11 years old. I was staying overnight at a friends house and we were trying to scare each other with ghost stories. I came up with a really good one and my buddy told me that I should write it down so that I can scare his little brother with it. I did write it down but only a few days later I ended up throwing it away. At that time, I was not a fan of reading, or writing for that matter, books in any shape or form. It was not until a little more than a decade later that I even thought that I could even be any good at all with storytelling.
What is your writing process?
My writing process? Well, in the past it was extremely lengthy as I felt that I had to do it all on my own. After meeting my talented editor and reviewer, I have been able to cut out a lot of time. Today, I write the story out completely and though that takes more time to get individual books out I personally like it because I feel like I can guarantee that I can give any fans the whole story quicker from the release of book 1 to the last. After I write the original story I take some time to work on another before returning with a fresh mind to perform what I call a rewrite, adding in and taking out things that do not quite fit and correcting mistakes that I can find. From there I send it to my reviewer who reads over each book and lets me know how he feels the story flows and how much sense it makes given the era of the story. Once I get my review I do a reread to correct any mistakes my reviewer found and to read it again and make sure that what I wrote makes sense to the flow of the story still. I then send it to my editor, who right now is a wonderful young lady who is in college to gain her major in English. She is kind enough to read through it and make grammar corrections for me and has even done a wonderful job of adding or editing story bits that flow perfectly with what I originally wrote. She has advised me on a great many things and because of her I am a better writer and storyteller. After she returns my documents to me I go through another read, adding and subtracting bits and pieces. It is only at that time that I feel that I can release it to my audience.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I wont talk about the first I ever read, honestly until a decade ago I did not enjoy reading at all. But the first one that I can honestly say that I read the entire thing was a book my wife gave me. It was by Marion Zimmer Bradley and it was a book of short stories called Lythande, adept of the blue star. This one novel did for me what other novels do for most people. It opened my eyes to a whole new world and with the idea of my own books it showed me that I can write in multiple forms. It was after this novel that I willingly sought out other novels from Piers Anthony, Mercedes Lackey and many others to learn how to write in the first place and from that I learned a much more important lesson. Every story, whether it is fiction or not is a story worth reading. They are lives of people I have never known in worlds that I through I could only read about. Once I began writing my own, I learned they were worlds that I could visit instead of only read about.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to incorporate something about that particular part of the story into the cover, but other then that it is all about how I feel about the finished image that I can come close to accepting the finished work.
What do you read for pleasure?
There are several actually. J.K.Rowling's Harry Potter series is one of my favorites, but also the Mage series from Mercedes Lackey, which contains several different stories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Mostly my phone, but the apps on my toshiba laptop are quite nice for reading virtual books.
When did you first start writing?
I first starting actually writing in 2006, but it was not until around 2009 that I actually got serious about it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy in writing came just recently with a review I got right here on smashwords. I would have been happy with any review, including a nasty one for that would mean someone read my first book, the one I got from Debra Lewis made me very happy indeed. This is what she said; Loved this book! has great potential for a long saga as the mystery is solved. I enjoyed the diversity of the characters. The tug and pull of family or a great cause, which to choose? When is the next book? I want to find out what happens. This review made my day when I read it. To find that someone, anyone out there in this world found this story as wonderful as I personally do was thrilling beyond most anything in my life, with the exception of my daughters being in my life.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world to me. Granted, I do not have a large fan base, but the few people who have read my books and have given advise and or encouragement has been one thing that has kept me writing to begin with.
What are you working on next?
I have a schedule for myself, though it may take a bit. I am trying to finish up the editing and everything for this first series, The End of Old Ways. After that, I will be working on the next series which is actually the past for this first set of novels, three hundred years in the past to be precise. That story I still need to finish writing and then I must go through the normal process. After that, I will begin a officially writing a story that is within the same world as both of these but a long, long time before they ever take place. And from there, your guess is as good as mine on where I will go. The sky is the limit really.
