Interview with Anne Kaestner

How long have you been interested in writing?
When I was about seven years old some friends of my parents gave me a diary. Almost every day I wrote something down in it, even if it only said, “Forgot what I did.” From that point on I wrote a new diary every year up until the age of about nineteen years old. During my junior and high school years I was always writing short stories and poetry and giving them to my teachers to read. Nearly all of them encouraged me and would stay after school to give me moral support and helping me with my grammar and spelling.
Tell me about your family history.
I was born in England back in the 1950’s. My parents met each other during World War 2 when my Dad was stationed in England. After the war my mother came to the United States and my parents got married in a small, enthusiastic, Pentecostal church in 1948. Mother was twenty-one at the time. She remained in the United States a year but got tired of living in her mother-in-law’s house. My Dad did not have enough money to support her any other way. So she saved up for what was supposed to be a short visit back to her family in England, then refused to return to the United States. My Dad was so in love with her that he went to England and remained there for nine years, living with my mother in her mother’s small flat (apartment). I was born during those years, then my sister, then my brother. Then in 1959, my Dad got a letter telling him that his mother was dying of cancer. He returned to the United States right away. But it still took two more years and the threat of divorce before my mother was willing to return to the United States with my brother, sister, and myself.
Tell me about your Christian faith.
It’s a long story but to make it more concise, when I was ten years old, I was “Born Again” at “Daily Vacation Bible School” at the same church that my grandmother attended and where my parents were married. A year later I developed a closer walk with God through the Baptism in His Holy Spirit while staying at “Pilgrim Camp,” which was run by the same church. My parents later moved from Queens, New York, out to Long Island and took me out of the church. The new church my family attended believed in being “Born Again” but they just didn’t have the same enthusiasm for the Lord. Their sermons became boring and their examples were discouraging. This led to several years of backsliding for me. During my twenties I began working in New York City and took an apartment in Staten Island. There I began to attend another church near my home and through several deeply spiritual experiences, recommitted my life to the Lord.
What about your education and work history?
I was educated and employed in both the United States and England. As an adult, although my work history for many years was primarily in the financial field, writing always remained my passion! I attended “Browns Business School” and then the “New York Institute of Credit.” And I worked at several large investment banking and brokerage firms such as Paine Webber, Blyth Eastman Dillon, Goldman Sachs, and Merrill Lynch. I left Merrill Lynch in 1980 when I got married and found that the long commute into the city from Long Island, as well as my new responsibilities as a wife, created a stressful environment. And my marriage was more important to me than the job. So I accepted temporary work assignments from various agencies.

The church again became a big part of our lives. However we became alarmed at the many religious scandals that were occurring at that time. Even smaller churches were making headlines with pastors caught in embarrassing and illegal activity. The closer we got to the Lord the further we seemed to be from the church environment. We got tired of the many baby showers, beautiful baby contests, fashion shows, skits, and sports events sponsored by the church. Personal issues also began to take their toll on us. I continued to study my Bible regularly, a practice I had began during my twenties. We wanted a closer walk with God than the current religious environment offered. So in 1988 the Lord led my husband and myself to start our own ministry and we began “Bible Believers Fellowship, Inc.”

This short book focuses on the emotions most of us feel at times when the world seems too overwhelming to bare. It’s as if some strange force is coming against us in such a persistent, tenacious pattern that we want to just stick our head under the bed covers and block it all out. We ask the question, “God, what are you doing to me?” This is the testimony of one woman who found the answer.
