Interview with Nancy Gavilanes

When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since I was a child. I would mainly write in diaries and journals as a kid. In fifth grade, I was making mini-magazines for fun with my older sister. In high school, I was the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, and I was the Social Issues Editor of my college's newspaper. I went on to major in journalism and to write for various publications including The New York Times. Looking back, I guess it's always felt pretty natural for me to jot down my thoughts and to give voice to certain issues. Now I can see that it's a gift that God has given me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
These days I find joy in encouraging others with stories and testimonies about God's amazing love for us. I used to keep these insights to myself, but once I realized that it blessed others I couldn't keep quiet anymore. There's so much bad news out there. I want to share stories that will inspire others to keep going and to keep loving God.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy traveling and taking photos!
Describe your desk
Right now it's my kitchen table. Depending on what I'm working on, I'll have my laptop open with a notebook, Bible, and reference books piled around me. I'm working on getting a formal desk soon!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had a story to tell, and I needed to share it with others. I enjoy the freedom that comes with being an indie author.
What has been one of the highlights of your writing career?
This year one of my devotionals won Our Daily Bread's Facebook Contest for Readers! I was so honored to have won. I've read them many times over the years and admire how their work touches lives all around the world.
