Interview with Afiniki Akanet

When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first published book, Fortitude, in 2008, but I was always writing short stories and a 'making magazines' for my parents as a child. I write when I have something specific to say, so I do not write often, especially because of my many other projects. So far, I have written three books in eight years, but I also write short articles for websites and medical journals.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
As an entrepreneur, it was an easy decision to make. I like the idea of allowing readers (not traditional publishers) decide what is worth reading.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually have a good idea of what I want for my covers, so the designing is easy.
I love to get feedback about covers from readers, so please let me know what you think.
Sometimes, a new cover gives a book new life, so we sometimes change covers for different editions.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone or tablet.
Describe your desk
My desk is normally tidy because I do not function well in chaos. Tidy does not always mean clean or organised, but I like tidy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family, my work, my vision, my purpose, my plans.
Apart from the fact that I have to get up and do things for my small children, I get out of bed because I look forward to getting things done and for the satisfaction of having a fruitful day.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book was written after the birth of my first child and edited several times until my second child was born. It will be launched in May 2017. Having children while working as a medical doctor and entrepreneur has taught me a lot about life and how to manage my time and resources. This was a message I felt was worth sharing. It is not just for mothers, entrepreneurs, students or professionals - the book was written for everyone that wants to improve their efficiency and level of satisfaction with life.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I lived in Nigeria until I was 16 and even after spending all of my adult life in the UK, I feel that Nigeria has had a big influence in my life. My writing is mostly motivational because I had several challenges and had to grow up quickly after moving to the UK. I like to help others think beyond their challenges and focus on achieving their goals - this reflects in most of my writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a medical doctor, manage my babysitting company, spend time with my family, volunteer for Forte Charity and go to church. My hobbies include watching movies, reading and listening to music.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love it when people read my book and tell me how it has helped them to see things differently, make a positive change or even made their day, because it was interesting and inspiring. I enjoy being able to express myself through writing and I like being able to connect with readers that I would not normally have met.
