Interview with Alea Rose

What do you read for pleasure?
I love romance! My favorite authors are Marsha Canham, Marsha Canham and... oh dear, I'm repeating myself. Ms. Canham writes the best pirate romances I have ever read in my life. It's no wonder that I love reading her books so much.

Other than romance, I love true crime books, mysteries, books on anthropology and archeology and even a bit of steam punk. Let's just say that my tastes are diverse.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Mostly, I read ebooks on my computer, but I have a very old Kindle and an iPad - which I'd have to say is probably my preferred reader, because I can choose from multiple apps to buy books and read.
Describe your desk
Right now, my desk is a mess. :/
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a very tiny town with a post office, a bar, a bank and a grocery store that mostly sold expired food (nobody bought meat/dairy/produce there, but canned goods and candy were fairly safe choices). There was little to do but ride bicycles and use our imaginations. I traveled the world in books. It is a love that endures to this day.
When did you first start writing?
Age five, I think. I started writing romances seriously in 1991, and have shared them here and there over the years.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well, it's been a successful endeavor for me under an alternate nom de plume...
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Great advice on all things, but the best part of Smashwords has been distribution in the premium catalog.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing something that makes people think about something in a way that perhaps they haven't considered before. I love being able to take people away from whatever their reality might be and let them enter another world that offers a hopefully pleasant or provocative escape.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me.
What are you working on next?
Well, I have several stories in progress, several in edits. Some in another genre all together (and published under another name). It's nice to shift between genres and writing styles for me - I love writing, and it always feels like I'm not *really* working, so romance fiction is like a vacation within a vacation.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My bladder? Seriously, it's usually thirst, sunlight, physiologic need, or some idea that came to me in that moment where I'm not quite sleeping but still not awake and need to write it down before I lose it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Research takes up a vast amount of time. I love movies. I read. I spend time with friends and family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the ebooks I read are by well established authors, or indies based upon recommendations of people who read my books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. I would say it was sci-fi. I think I was eleven years old. There were mice-shaped erasers, and I believe they were somehow transformed into the tomato soup we had for lunch that day, though the mechanism of transformation escapes me in my old age.
What is your writing process?
My process is that I write every day, even if it's just an exercise to stretch beyond what I think my limits are. I read constantly. I take copious digital notes.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I clearly recall reading was The Night Before Christmas. I wanted those parents, that house, and visions of sugarplums dancing in my head.
How do you approach cover design?
I look at stock photos until I think my eyes may bleed until I see something that seems to reflect the overall mood of the book. Then I nag at the Photoshop expert in my life so my skills are constantly being refreshed.
