Interview with Alex Drinkwater, Jr.

Describe your desk
Messy - cluttered!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Providence, RI. My main character in "The Ghosts of Hanoi" is also from Providence. I suppose my southern New England, Italian-American background has had a major impact on my thinking process.
When did you first start writing?
Since I was a kid. I started writing seriously (i.e., with a eye toward getting published) around 1980 or so.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"In the Name of the Sun" is a science fiction thriller born out of a desire to merge SF with "espionage" fiction. The result is actually more like "military SF."
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Trying to get published the traditional way is closely akin to trying to win the lottery!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has gotten my stuff before the public eye and I've sold a few books because of it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I complete a project!
What are you working on next?
Nothing at the moment except for publishing up "In the Name of the Sun" for a publisher who has expressed interest in it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Clancy, Asimov, Wells, Verne, Alfred Bester, A.E. Van Vogt, LeCarre, Fleming, Alan Furst, and Allen Drury to name a few.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, listening to music, and my part time bartending job.

"Duly" is a novel on the abuse of power and its consequences in the context of a radical administration bent on "reforming" the military to conform to "political correctness" and the efforts of a few patriots dedicated to thwarting the attempt. Their struggle results in the one of the biggest crises in the history of the US Government. - "Reads like a Clancy novel!" (From a recent purchaser)
