Interview with A.D. English

Published 2014-01-06.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm acutely aware of my graphic art limitations and only try to suggest the flavour of the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have a taste for pre-war detective fiction and also enjoy history, especially military history.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use an android tablet.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Publicity on specialist web sites.
Describe your desk
It's the kitchen table!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
London. But I'm not sure that influenced my writing other than providing some backgrounds.
When did you first start writing?
As a child. School magazine, that sort of thing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I guess my subject matter is not mainstream.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Not a lot, it's a minority channel, but every sale is an encouraging success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I can pull the threads together.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. There's no point to writing without readers.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Dickson Carr in fiction, Alan Clarke in military history.
What is your writing process?
I don't write in a linear way from start to finish. When I have the beginning and end, established where the story is going to, I write sections in-between.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I'm not certain about the very first. The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe made a vivid impression on me as a child, and then I went through a Biggles phase, I read them all.
