Interview with Matthew Kennedy

What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book (HEALSPACE: The Space of Life) is book 4 of The Metaspace Chronicles, a series I'm in the middle of as we speak. It's about a future Earth where we traded for alien technology that eventually failed on us and crashed our civilization. However, exposure to the alien tech has bred a generation of people that *can* handle the psionic engineering, so a self-taught "wizard" is founding a school to graduate people who can give us the psionic tech support we never had before. Hopefully, Earth's civilization can rise again using a hybrid human-alien technology. I'm proofreading/editing that volume now. The first book in the series (PATHSPACE: The Space of Paths) is already out on Amazon and Smashwords, as is the second book (SPINSPACE: The Space of Spins) and the third book (TONESPACE: The Space of Energy).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Virginia, Florida, and California because my dad was Navy Air and his carrier kept moving. Moving every couple of years made it hard to have long-term friendships, so books became important as reliable companions. Once we moved into a house where someone had left a large number of books behind and that was a treasure trove for me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Android tablet from Velocity Micro. I read my eBooks on it, but I do everything else on my desktop computer.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first novel in 2004 when I was unemployed for a few months. Ebooks were almost nonexistent back then, so I tried to land an agent and go the traditional route. I had no luck, and when I eventually found a full-time job it sucked up my energy and I stopped writing. But it was a good experience in terms of learning what works for me and what doesn't with my voice and style.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
All the advantages. Instant publishing. Global reach. Effortless distribution. Instant delivery. Zero inventory. Never going out of print. The only thing that could lure me back to traditional publishing is a significant cash advance (and it would have to be pretty freakin significant, to offset the huge 12-18 month delay in getting a book to market in the traditional way).
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating entire universes and using them to inspire other humans.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything. They are the reason i write. No way would I be doing this in a cave somewhere, where no one would ever read it. if there were no internet to pass them my dreams, I would have given up years ago.
What are you working on next?
My next book is TONESPACE: The Space of Energy (book 3 of the Metaspace Chronicles). I've already begun working on it as I put the finishing touches on SPINSPACE.
Who are your favorite authors?
Robert A Heinlein (Stranger In A Strange Land) for the way he brought Humanism and "non-arty plain prose" to science fiction. Neil Stephenson (Anathem) for the way he reminds us that learning and knowledge are important. L. E. Modesitt Jr. (The Magic of Recluce, The Magic Engineer) for his ability to make you believe his wizards have earned their abilities. Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time) for his example of how to write an epic series with gradually increasing complexity. Terry Pratchett (Discworld) for his ability to teach gently without being preachy, and to do it with real style - because writing humorous fiction is HARD. And Edgar Rice Burroughs, who did it all a hundred years ago.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The knowledge that my books will not write themselves.
