Interview with Alice W. Ross

What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read a good romance story or a mystery.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I carry a Nook in my purse at all times and whenever I have to wait for an appointment I am never bored. I also read every night before bedtime.
Describe your desk
My desk is an old mahogany desk. On one side are bookends holding reference books about Great Britain. On a pullout shelf I usually have my laptop and on the center space I am usually writing notes.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are appreciated more than they will probably know. My lifetime dream was to write a book. Once I did it I was happy, but through the encouragement of fans I continued to write. Now I am totally obsessed with researching and plotting my next book. As long as people are interested I am happy to entertain with my stories. Thank you for your encouragement.
What are you working on next?
I am just starting the research for the third book in my Scottish highland series. If you think my main character, Kiska, had a roller coaster ride in The Pictorial Adventure and Message in the Skye, wait until you see what I have planned for her and her friends in the next book.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't have one favorite author. I am a very fast reader so I read several books a week. I love a good romance with characters who have some virtue and strong personalities. I also love mysteries. I grew up reading Agatha Christie and I still love the books. I love the mystery and romance of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. Books like Henry Fielding's Tom Jones inspired me to also love adventure.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Plotting the next scene of an adventure always inspires me to get out of bed. Many times I continue to dream about my characters when I sleep. When I wake I am excited to reveal their next adventure in words.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am usually creating something else. I have always loved arts and crafts. I enjoy scrapbooking, designing greeting cards with rubber stamps, painting, sewing and just about any project I can imagine.
I also love to travel with my husband and spend time with our family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have a Nook and I just read the overview of the ebooks and viewer comments. I am also a member of Goodreads where books are discussed in-depth.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
From the time I could write I was writing stories. In elementary school my best friend and I used to write stories and read them to each other. The first story I can remember writing was a children's story called Human Beings and Big Black Shoes.
What is your writing process?
My writing process usually starts with an overall plot idea in my head. Then I do lots of research about the setting where my characters live. I find out what kinds of places they would go to eat or be entertained. I study the area so that I can describe it accurately. Then I research the historical facts needed for the plot. To me all the research is the hardest part of the process. The writing is easy. The most exciting day is when I finally begin writing the book. There is no paper outline, just a plan in my head for my characters to have a certain adventure. It is then that the fun begins because it just happens. To me it is like planning a wedding. You think of all the things you want to happen and you carry them out in a logical sequence. It is all about the details and the process of getting to the big event. That is the fun of writing.
