Interview with Alisha Howard

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Mississippi, and was greatly influenced by the story telling nature of the African American southerners that were in my community. Think Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God" type of story telling. It made me want to contribute to the cause!
When did you first start writing?
My first story was a space adventure about a boy and a girl. I was eight years old (I still have it!).
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's one that I wrote a long time ago for my (at the time) eleven year old brother. I wanted to entertain, and he ended up liking the first few chapters I showed him so I kept writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like having 1000% control of my content, marketing and publishing. I also like not having to query and then bite my nails waiting for a response.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's allowed me to reach users across the internet and price my book for free. Can't beat that!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finishing the story and then rereading it some time later. I honestly can say that I write stories I want to read, so sometimes I'll get frustrated when my story is incomplete. I'll be thinking, "Oh come on! What happens next?!" followed by "Oh, shoot. I haven't written it yet." :P
What do your fans mean to you?
Oh boy, fans are fantastic. Anyone who takes the time to come along on the adventure you just wrote is awesome and I truly appreciate them.
What are you working on next?
I'm almost finished with my first Paranormal Romance, Waking the Moon.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh gosh, too many to count. Let's see: On the YA side, there's Judy Blume, and J.K. Rowling (of course). And on the ParaRom side, Mary Janice Davidson, hands down.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well, keeping the internet on so that I can write and publish stories requires me to have a day job ha!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have three pets that keep me pretty active, a husband who would be lost without me (don't tell him I said that) and friends that always want me on the go. I also belong to Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. sorority and we work within the community to promote healthy living, scholarship among students and mentor young girls.
