Interview with Alyne Roberts

Who are your favorite authors?
S.C. Stephens, Abbi Glines, Colleen Hoover & M. Leighton.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work full time and in my free time, when not writing, I love to read, find books to read, and review. I also love watching entire seasons of TV shows. I will marathon watch shows. I could spend hours watching a single TV show. I'm also into some arts and crafts and wine-making. And drinking wine.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I use Goodreads a lot to find books or browsing through iBooks store. I am interested in Indie authors at the moment so I have been browsing Goodreads list for indie authors.
What is your writing process?
I use software called Scrivener to compose my drafts and then format. I have my iMac setup in my living room and often set it up on the coffee table. I know, you are supposed to work in a quiet, distraction free area, but I work better with the noise and people and pets around. I use a dry erase board and stickies to plan out the story and plan out the chapters. I set a total word count goal and then a chapter word count goal. I just try to keep writing and stay inspired.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read tons of romance. I try to find something unique and exciting. I try to avoid cliche ideas. The more drama the better! I want to cry and laugh out loud. I want stories that keep me up all night.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an iPad that I read on now. I occasionally use my iPhone if I absolutely have to, but hate the small screen.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had the story Light to the Darkness in my head for a while. I finally decided I needed to sit down and write it down, even if only for my own eyes. After doing research, and finding Smashwords, I learned it was possible to publish on your own. I didn't need to send a manuscript out to hundreds of publishers and wait for someone to like it. My favorite author ever, S. C. Stephens published her first book, Thoughtless, on Smashwords. I realized that I could do this myself and let my story do all the work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being off in my own little world. I can bring characters to life and give them a happy, or unhappy, ending. I like when my mind is just swimming with ideas and thoughts.
There is also nothing like the feeling of finishing something. I can't believe I actually created a book with over 80,000 words and 26 chapters. I am proud of the work and time I put into it.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book called Jolted next. This will be part of a series of at least 3 books. It's about a girl who has everything. She is perfect and a real good girl. After the love of her life dies in a car accident, she acts out. She rebels against everything she was while she was with her boyfriend. She meets a guy and for the first time ever, she is attracted to someone else. While she rebels and struggles with moving on, or staying true to her first love, she learns a secret that turns everything upside down. I am really excited about this story. It will also be in 2 POV, which is a first for me.
How do you approach cover design?
I really try to find something that catches the eye. It is hard to stay unique these days. I have several cover images that I had to change because I found it on another cover. I make my own covers in Photoshop and Illustrator and try to make them creative. I use different and unique fonts to set it apart and grab attention. I try to keep it simple. Sometimes covers that are very busy look cheap and amateur. I will often pass these books up when I see them on shelve. I want them to portray the story. For Light to the Darkness, I created a cover that I felt showed the passion and conflict between the Lucas and Natalie.
What are your three favorite books, and why?
Thoughtless - S.C. Stephens - first eBook I ever read. I fell in love with the story and with reading. This book is the reason I started reading so much.
I Got Your Number - Sophie Kinsella - different from what I would usually read but I love the light and funny feel to the book.
Fallen Too Far - Abbie Glines - my favorite of her books. I loved the passion, heat and the characters.
