Interview with Alieu Mansaray

What are your five favorite books, and why?
Standing At the Scratch Line, Native Son, Harry Potter series, Interview With A Vampire, and how can I forget my own books Life Redemption series...lol!
What do you read for pleasure?
Urban literatures, vampire novels, crime stories, most books tend to draw my interest.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Self promotion, going out and interacting with my readers. I had one reader who after purchasing my "Life Redemption" novel actually approached me on another day and told me she felt sorry for me. When I asked her why, she told me it was because of what she read in my book and what happened to the character in the story Abdul's family, she felt it was a true portrait of my life. I had to calm her down and tell her the story was made up, it was fiction. It gave me a true sense of being a great writer when I can draw a reader of my novels into my stories and having them believe my story to be true.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Africa, Sierra Leone to be exact and it definitely helps draw on my experience when I tend to create scenes and build characters within my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I have always been a writer but I got into writing while I became incarcerated upstate doing a five years prison sentence for weapon possession. I found writing as my escape from the every day tension within those prison confines. My writing helped me focus on my inner self.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book right now which I am still working on is based on a vampire novel, I want to show certain writers like John Grisham, that as an Urban literature writer we are capable of delving into their style of writing. As an Urban literature I want to prove us capable of stepping outside of our boundaries to write just as well, if not better than other writers who feel Urban literature writers can not comprehend basic grammar. Oh, I can not forget as well, I have "My Brother's Keeper" finished and ready for publication.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Life experience, loving to write, hard working parents plus sisters, struggles I've gone through, and hardships tend to bring the best out of me and push me to write.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
As of now Smashwords has giving me the tools needed to convert my books to e-readers. I found Smashwords to be very helpful in that aspect of my books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to see my finished literature work in print, and finding someone reading my novel on the train.
What do your fans mean to you?
They give me the drive and energy to push forward and write. They tend to inspire me to write even more. I just want to thank those that have purchased my book and have supported me and my journey, I still got more to tell.
What are you working on next?
I already have "My Brother's Keeper" done and I am finishing up on my "Vampire Origin's 'The Genealogy' novel which is coming out real soon!
Who are your favorite authors?
There are too many to name because I am a fan of many other authors.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am constantly fine tuning my novels or I tend to work out.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through the internet or seeing someone reading on the trains.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I had writing a story in high school which I had to get up to the front of the class to read and after reading the story the teacher and other students believed the story was real. It gave me a sense of power that my writing can draw people in.
What is your writing process?
There is no process, ideas tend to come to me. At times all I might need is a drink of liquor to relax with and allow my thought process to work. At other times ideas tend to come to me whiles I am in the shower. You can say they tend to flow better that way in the shower.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As stated I can not remember the first story I ever read. It is too deep in my memory banks to pull out.
