Interview with Amrita Rao

Published 2018-05-13.
When did you first start writing?
Believe it or not, I started writing only after four decades on this planet! Serious writing that is, as in a novel. Before that, I've written grocery lists, personal mails, entered essay and short story competitions in school and college, done my home work etc.!!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to create a world hitherto unknown to the general public. I wanted characters that would be MINE and obey my every command. I wanted to orchestrate every event that took place in this world. In short, I wanted to be God for a little while. Unfortunately, no one told me, until I started writing, that once you have created the world and people, and enter the world with them, they take over and you have absolutely no control over the story!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The process itself is a great joy. When I begin writing and enter the world I created and observe and record, there is no other feeling in the world that compares.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the reason I decided to write another book and make this into a series! You could say they are my motivation now.
What are you working on next?
Book 2 of the Archeology Series...I've not named the book yet, but it has the same world and characters as Lost Gem of the Nagas.
Who are your favorite authors?
I've so many. Some of them are - Agatha Christie, James Rollins, Michael Crichton, Matthew Reilly, Robin Cook, Enid Blyton, J.K. Rowling, James Patterson, Dan Brown, and Tom Clancy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a full-time teacher at a boarding school.
What is your writing process?
To be honest, I don't have much of a process. I have a vague idea about how many chapters there should be, and how many words. Also a skeleton of a plot. But once I start writing, the characters take over and write the story.
How do you approach cover design?
For my first book, I designed the cover myself. I enjoyed doing it and although it may not be as professional as it could be, I'm learning as I go!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords helps me display my book on several platforms. This increases visibility and more book lovers add my book to their collection.
Describe your desk
My desk is rather boring...there's just my laptop, a wifi dongle, and... me.

If you love reading YA fantasy books, this is the right book for you. It has an entirely new world, based on Indian mythology with mythical beings that exist in actual ancient Sanskrit scriptures. Combine this with contemporary people living in the present-day world and you have Lost Gem of the Nagas! Archeology plays the part of the bridge that spans the gulf between these two disparate worlds.
